Disputation of Liu Liu

We are proud to share that Prof. Rade Hajdin contributed as co-referent to the successful doctoral defense of Liu Liu, who has been awarded her PhD for the dissertation titled “BIM-enabled Information Delivery for Transportation Infrastructure Operation and Maintenance Using Semantic Web Technology.”

In her research, Liu Liu explored how Building Information Modeling (BIM) can be effectively integrated into Infrastructure Asset Management Systems (IAMS) to enhance efficiency during the operation and maintenance phase of transportation infrastructure. Her work focuses on improving how information is structured, exchanged, and utilized in everyday engineering processes.

A key contribution of the dissertation lies in the development of standardized workflows and ontological linking approaches based on the Level of Information Need (LOIN) and Semantic Web technologies. These innovations enable more consistent and interoperable data exchange between BIM models and existing systems, such as Bridge Management Systems and Pavement Management Systems. Practical applications demonstrated in the research—particularly in pavement inspection and bridge maintenance—highlight the real-world impact and usability of these methods.

The dissertation was supervised by Prof. Markus König (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) as first supervisor, with Prof. Rade Hajdin (University of Belgrade) serving as second supervisor and co-referent. The defense was chaired by Prof. Nina Nytus.

We warmly congratulate Liu Liu on this significant academic achievement and are pleased that Prof. Hajdin could support this important contribution to the advancement of digital infrastructure management. We wish Liu Liu continued success in her future career.
